Stillmun, Twer power Jenkintown

Posted Thursday, September 24, 2009 by Bob Raines
Jenkintown faced a tall task when then hosted unbeaten Schuylkill Valley last Thursday at Plymouth Whitemarsh High. The Drakes had lost two in a row and were facing one of the better small school teams in the Reading area.

In the first half, both teams wasted opportunities near and in the red zone, until Schuylkill Valley’s quarterback Derek Gaul scampered 29 yards around his right side late in the second quarter to give the visitors a 6-0 lead that stretched to 7-0 after the successful point-after attempt.

The scrappy Drakes fought back behind two pass completions from sophomore quarterback Pat Stillmun to senior wideout Aden Twer and the running of senior Shawn McCarthy. With 18 seconds remaining in the half, Stillmun hoisted a long throw down the right side that Twer took in stride at the 12-yard line, gliding into the end zone for a 42-yard touchdown. Teddy Hudson’s point-after tied the score at 7-7 at the half.

Two fumbles early in the second half wound up favoring Jenkintown. First, Jenkintown turned the ball over deep in Panthers’ territory as the Drakes looked like they were moving for the go-ahead score, when Stillmun was hit just as he was handing the ball off to McCarthy.

From there the Panthers moved down the field—with a 12-yard run by Schuylkill Valley’s DJ Shuttleworth  stopped just short of paydirt at the Jenkintown one-yard line by the Drakes Jack Kinnery. This perhaps was the pivotal play of the game.

Two plays after Kinnery’s shoestring tackle, the Drakes recovered a Gaul fumbled snap near the goal line—thwarting an almost certain tiebreaking score. Subsequently Jenkintown moved it out to the 16-yard line to set up some big-time aerial heroics. Stillmun found Twer short over the middle and the senior didn’t stop running until he reached the end zone some 84 yards later. The successful kick gave the Drakes a 14-7 lead.

In the fourth period Jenkintown struck again. From the Panthers’ 48-yard line, Stillmun once more found Twer long down the right side. Even though the referee indicated defensive pass interference on the play, Twer still came down with the ball on his back at the 12-yard line. Eventually, from the seven-yard line, McCarthy took it in, followed by Hudson’s kick that made it 21-7.

With the fourth quarter almost half over, the Panthers finally began to move. A quick drive down field ended in a Shuttleworth 2-yard dive—and the kick made it 21-14 with 6:08 left. While the Drakes did manage a couple first downs after the ensuing kickoff, they turned the ball over on downs at the Schuylkill Valley 42-yard line with 3:33. With 1:33 left it was Shuttleworth again to bring the score to 21-20.

But Jenkintown brought the house on the extra point attempt and it fluttered wide right.

The joyous Drakes fielded the onside kick cleanly and proceeded to run out the clock for a much-deserved first win of the year.

Stillmun completed 16 of 19 passes for 294 yards and two TDs in only his second varsity start. Twer caught a career high seven passes for a school record 243 yards and two TDs and recovered a fumble. McCarthy ran 25 times for 101 yards and one TD. Devin Perkins and Jack Kinnery intercepted passes.
