Jenkintown outlasts Calvary in OT

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 by Mike Prince
Rewind to August 30th. The Drakes, in their 1st home game of the season, are down by 2 scores to York Tech, only to fight their way back and force overtime. In OT, Jenkintown scored first and added an extra point. York-Tech came right back with a score, only to be stuffed on a 2-pt converion by the Drakes defense, giving Jenkintown the win.
Fast forward to last Friday night. Replace Calvary Christian with York Tech and that is exactly how Jenkintown went on to win this past weekend. Only this time, the game seemed over before it even started.
"Any win is big for us, but this was just a battle all night," Drakes coach Hal Smith said. " My coaches definitely conditioned the guys really well for this game and it paid off."
For about 60 seconds after the opening kickoff, Jenkintown was enjoying Senior Night and looking forward to getting one last win on their home field. However, seconds later, Calvary scored one their 1st play from scrimmage and diminished the Drakes' excitement.
Cougards soph Ian Richardson took the 1st handoff and ran 56 yards for a score, beating the entire Jenkintown defense to the outside with his speed and athleticism. It was a huge blow for the Drakes, who came into the game with only 1 loss on the season. Richardson finished the game with 92 yards on 18 carries and 4 touchdowns. He also gained 44 yards receiving on the game.
Though Jenkintown managed to get a tying score before the end of the 1st quarter, the Cougars went on to take a 14-point lead into halftime after a pair of 2nd quarter touchdowns. A Jenkintown deficit that was caused by costly turnovers and poor mistakes, ones which it appeared they would never recover from.
"We had to shuffle guys around in the second half, but we really fought hard," said Smith. " Our guys just came out in the second half and started to focus. It was a battle of who was going to give in first."
The Drakes trailed 27-7 late in the 3rd quarter when quarterback Conor Beltz found Erik Stumpo in the back of the endzone for a 7-yard touchdown pass. It shifted the momentum for Jenkintown and it was the spark they needed to mount a comeback.
Beltz completely took over the game in the 4th quater. After finding Aden Twer for a 50-yard touchdown pass, the Drakes held the Cougars to a quick drive. Beltz capitalized on the good field position and ran in for another touchdown, this time for 4 yards. A Ted Hudson extra point tied the game at 27.
Beltz finished the game 11-28 passing for 207 yards and 4 touchdowns, as well as 85 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
"Our run game stepped up and I was able to get outside the pocket and make some plays in the second half," said Beltz. "I think they were getting tired and sitting back with the pases and I was able to take advantage of that."
Following the Jenkintown score, Calvary returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Drakes 21-yard line and scored 2 plays later, leaving 3 minutes to play. It ended up being just enough time.
Beltz found wideout Joseph Costis for a 12-yard score in the corner of the endzone, tying the game at 33 and giving the Drakes a chance to win it allwith an extra point.
However, Hudson squibed the the extra-point try by hitting the crossbar and sending the game to overtime.
Costis also caught the game-winning score when a Beltz pass was tipped by Twer, bounced off a Cougar defender's back, and into the diving arms of Costis.
The rest is history, as the Drakes pulled out yet another OT victory with the failed 2-point conversion try by Calvary.
For Calvary Christian coach Mike Reichenbach, it was a spiritual win for his team and he did not leave the game disappointed.
"God called me away from professional football and told me to start a team at this ministry," he said. "Our job is to come out and give everything we got and that's what we did tonight. This was a night where we finally came tonight and walked together. We've been injured, banged up, and we walked in victory and I could not be more proud of this team right now. This is one the best teams Jenkintown has even had, but we fought and it was a great game."
For Reichenbach and Calvary Christian, the game may have been a win to them mentally and spiritually, but when it comes down to everything, the win for Jenkintown gives them an impressive 6-1 record and a chance to play on and possibly go further in the playoffs.
"This win was huge for us," said Beltz. "We'll see where we go from here but this win was just absolutely huge."
