McCarthy powers Drakes by Bulldogs

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 by Mike Prince
The weather may have turned from mild to freezing on Friday night, but that didn't stop Jenkintown from staying hot, as they knocked off Morrisville 55-27. It was a score that didn't seem possible before a 3rd quarter had started, a quarter in which the Drakes broke out for 4 straight touchdowns.
Behind a fierce rushing attack that piled up 414 rushing yards, the Drakes won going away after scoring 42 of the final 48 points in the game. Tailback Sean McCarthy was the difference, as he ran for 273 yards on 25 carries and 4 touchdowns, including runs of 20, 30, and 40 yards for scores.
"Our offensive line played great and it opened up a lot of holes for meto run through," McCarthy said.
It may have been the play of the offensive line and it may have been a lack of size on the defensive end for the bulldogs, bu either way, Jenkintown was finding roomto run all day. Jack Kinniry added 57 yeards and 2 touchdowns for the Drakes also, and quarterback Conor Beltz, who threw for 102 yards and a touchdown, ran for 47 yards on 8 carries.
The Bulldogs only gained 220 total yards of offense compared to 516 yards for the Drakes, who after the 1st quarter, dominated the ball completely en route to the 2nd straight win.
Jenkintown now holds a 7-1 record on the season and has a chance to go even further with one of the league's best records. The Drakes' only loss came against Academy of the New Church 2 weeks ago.
"This was a big win for us and we're going to continue to go out there and play our game," Drakes coach Hal Smith said. "The kids are doing a great job for us out there every week and we're just going to try and keep winning games."
Besides the 7 offense touchdowns that the Drakes produced, they got points from the defense also. Mike Jakowenko, who ran for 32 yards on just 3 carries, intercepted a Matt Cookson pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. It was the 5th straight score for the Drakes and the final score of the 3rd quarter, leaving no doubt who had complete control of the game.
Jenkintown's defense held Morrisville to under 50 yards of total offense in the 2nd half after giving up 21 points in the 1st half.
Cookson was responsible for most of the Bulldogs' offense, as he threw for 108 yards and 1 touchdown on 8-23 passing, while running for 62 yards on 14 carries and 3 touchdowns.
While the ground game controlled the clock, Jenkintown had some success in the air with Eric Stumpo catching 6 balls for 54 yards and Aden Twer catching 2 for 39.
Jenkintown goes on to play Lower Moreland next Saturday looking to improve to 8-1 before finishing their season the following week againt Pennington High School. This is the best Jenkintown team the area has seen in years and looks to only get better with experience.
