Playoff Football: Jenkintown eliminates Delaware Valley Charter

Posted Tuesday, November 11, 2008 by Dave Holloway
Winning football games, particularly in the playoffs, usually requires a constant flow of adjustments.

The Jenkintown coaching staff barely had a chance to see if its preparations even had a chance at succeeding when it was forced to make changes in the game plan midway through the first period of last Saturday's PIAA Class A playoff game against Delaware Valley Charter.
Quarterback Conor Beltz connected with running back Jack Kinniry for a 19-yard pass on fourth-and-12 deep in Del Val territory. That was the good news. The bad news was that Beltz, who was hit as he threw the pass, didn't get up.
With Beltz hobbled, the Drakes' high-powered pass offense went by the wayside.
"We had to run the ball," Jenkintown coach Harold Smith said. "We had to pound the ball and they just got after it and did well."
Shawn McCarthy rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown and Eric Stumpo caught a short pass and turned it into a 14-yard touchdown to lead Jenkintown to a 22-12 victory over Delaware Valley Charter last Saturday in PIAA Class A playoff action.
When Beltz was helped off the field, sophomore Kevin Hull stepped in and finished the scoring drive, eventually scoring from a yard out on a quarterback draw, to give the Drakes an early 6-0 lead.
"The whole thing this year is that we are a team," senior captain Chris Divalentino said. "And Kevin Hull came in and did a great job of getting that first touchdown."
Del Val responded with a pair of second quarter touchdowns - a 47-yard Jibri Monk-to-Brad Wilson pass and a 1-yard Brian Murray run, the second coming with 1:14 left in the first half.
But the Drakes responded before halftime. McCarthy returned the kickoff to the Charter 34, then Beltz, who had trouble turning his hips to throw passes due to the injury, managed to get the ball out to Stumpo for the touchdown that tied it at intermission.
"We were limited in the second quarter," Smith said. "Conor said he couldn't throw the ball, but on the touchdown he said, 'I'm sucking it up,' and we changed it and he threw the ball out to the tight end."
Kinniry and McCarthy combined to give Jenkintown the lead midway through the third period on back-to-back runs - 27 yards by Kinniry and 45 yards for the touchdown by McCarthy.
Freshman Ted Hudson capped the scoring with a 25-yard field goal late in the third period, leaving the rest up to the Jenkintown defense.
David Castner recovered a fumble to stop a Del Val drive at the Drakes' 15-yard line early in the fourth quarter.
Divalentino then set up the final stop with a tremendous individual effort on defense. Del Val's Markeese Walker ran a sweep to his right, but when the Drakes shut it off, he reversed field.
Divalentino was in position to make the play, and, despite being nailed with a nasty blindsided block, he reached out and knocked down the Del Val ballcarrier
"Coach told me what to do and I stayed at home and did the job," Divalentino said. "I think the kid hit me so hard, I think I landed on (Walker's) leg."
Devon Perkins then picked off a desperation pass at the Jenkintown 10 with three minutes left.
Kinniry added 64 yards on the ground on just eight carries for the Drakes.
The win was Jenkintown's first post-season win in the school's history.
"It's good," Smith said of the win. "Now we have to continue, so we have another one next week against a very good Comm Tech team. They are a very good team."
Jenkintown will face Communications Tech Saturday at 1 p.m. at the city's Super Site at Southern High in Philadelphia.
