Jenkintown battles past Springfield

It was déjà vu all over again for Springfield on Friday as the Spartans squandered a first-half lead, failed to crack the scoreboard in the second half and dropped its second straight Independence League contest.
In a game that was virtually identical to their week four loss to Academy New Church, the Spartans saw their high-powered running attack explode early, but fizzle late as they let a 25-20 halftime lead slip away in a 33-25 defeat.
Christian Ross quieted a small, but enthusiastic Homecoming crowd at Jenkintown by returning the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown for a 6-0 Spartans' lead and then, after the Drakes went three-and-out, returned a Conor Belz punt 55 yards to set up a Martin Goldfarb 1-yard touchdown run.
Jenkintown answered emphatically with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that included two play-action passes from Belz to fullback Alex Flood for big gains and was capped by a 20-yard Belz keeper that cut the deficit to 12-7.
The Drakes' Joe Costis then recovered a successful onside kick that bounced off a Spartan and gave Jenkintown possession at the Springfield 39. Three plays later, Belz hooked up with Chris DiValentino for a 31-yard touchdown to put the Drakes on top 13-12.
The back-and-forth battle continued after the Spartans' Steve Carpenter fell on another onside attempt by the Drakes and Goldfarb found a wide-open Montik Goodwin for a 50-yard score on the third play of the drive to put the Spartans back in front, 19-13.
A Christian Ross strip of tight end Eric Stumpo on the ensuing possession stymied a promising Drakes' drive, but Belz picked off Goldfarb three plays later and then led the Drakes' offense on a 12-play, 65-yard drive that included a 16-yard Belz keeper on a fourth-and-5 from the Springfield 19 and a 3-yard plunge by Homecoming King Rob Kilby for a 20-19 Jenkintown lead.
But after Goldfarb gave the Spartans the lead once again at 25-20 via a 33-yard sneak up the middle and Ross ended a last-minute Drakes' scoring threat with an interception in his own end zone as the first half expired, the Spartans struggled to seize that momentum in the third quarter.
The Drakes opened the second half with another Kilby touchdown run that was set up by strong running from junior Shawn McCarthy, who gave the Drakes a first-and-goal at the Spartans' 9-yard line after a 35-yard sprint.
McCarthy tacked on some insurance points with a 10-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to put a stamp on an impressive performance (17 carries, 138 yards).
The Drakes' defense did the rest, benefiting from a shoulder injury that sidelined Goldfarb with about three minutes to play.
The win kept the Drakes undefeated at 5-0 heading into another Independence League showdown with Academy New Church on Saturday at 3 p.m. It was the second straight loss for Springfield (3-2) after opening the season with three consecutive wins. The Spartans will look to stop the skid on Saturday at Lower Moreland at 1:30 p.m.
