Jenkintown edges York Tech in OT

In a game that was almost handed away several times in the fourth quarter, the Jenkintown Drakes beat the York Tech Spartans in an overtime thriller last Saturday with a 26-25 win. The two teams played 48 minutes of hard-nosed football, but needed extra time to decide the contest.
After Jenkintown quickly scored in overtime, on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Conor Beltz to Eric Stumpo, York Tech came right back with a score just moments later. Tech coach Buddy Looks decided that instead of kicking the extra point to extend the game, he wanted his team to win it right there. On the two-point conversion, Jenkintown's defensive line stepped up and stuffed Tech at the line of scrimmage, sealing the win and setting off a huge celebration for Jenkintown on its home field.
"I went into the huddle and asked the guys what they thought," said Looks, when describing why his team went for the win in overtime. "I told them we can run the option. We can run the dive. We could run whichever option they wanted. They wanted to go for it and they wanted to go for the win, so I said, 'it's your game.' Go for it."
The decision to go for two backfired for Looks, though he was happy for the way his team played.
"I was impressed with the way my team played and they definitely competed," Looks said. "I'm disappointed because of the guys lost but we're still learning."
Drakes' coach Hal Smith, who is known for being vocal on the sidelines, called timeout just before the two-point conversion attempt, trying to get his team set up for the play.
"We thought they'd either run one of two plays, so I wanted to have my team aware of what was coming on the play," said Smith.
Jenkintown opened the scoring in the first quarter when Beltz found junior, Aden Twer with a 60-yard touchdown. Though the Drakes were excited and their offense looked impressive, the lead didn't last long. York Tech's Tyson Hale returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
Beltz finished the day with good numbers, throwing for 133 yards on 8 of 15 passing, to go along with his two touchdowns. He also ran for 18 yards on six carries.
With the game tied halfway through the second quarter, Jenkintown struck again when senior tailback, Alex Flood got in the end zone from a yard out. He added another 2-yard run in the third quarter to give the Drakes a 12-point lead. Those would be Flood's only two carries of the day.
Extra points would be a problem for both teams throughout the day. York Tech also missed two extra points in the fourth quarter. The team's inability to kick extra points was "definitely an issue," according to Looks, when he decided to go for the win in overtime.
York Tech scored from two yards out to cut the lead to 19-13 early in the fourth quarter. On the following possession and with the game still in doubt, Jenkintown punted the ball from its own 40-yard line. Tech running back Dontrell Carroll caught the ball and brought it back 75 yards for the tying touchdown.
Jenkintown had one more opportunity in the final seconds of regulation, but Beltz lofted an underthrown pass to the end zone, where Tech intercepted it and ran out the clock before overtime.
Beltz redeemed himself, though, with a beautiful pass to the corner of the end zone to get the eventual game-winning score.
Smith was ecstatic with the win.

"We had a lot of mistakes with it being our first game, but the best thing I took out of it was that we fought hard," said Smith. "They believed in themselves and the team definitely showed me something out there."
